Tombow Pencil Co., Ltd. (headquarters: Kita-ku, Tokyo; president: Junichi Fukushima) is the first in the industry to use NAGORI®, a new composite material from Mitsui Chemicals, Inc. (headquarters: Yaesu, Chuo-ku, Tokyo; president and CEO: Osamu Hashimoto), made from minerals extracted from seawater, in the body of a writing instrument. The mechanical pencil “FUMI” (product name/price: 2,200 JPY (2,000 JPY excluding tax)) will be released at stationery stores and stationery corners nationwide from March 5th.
“FUMI” is made from cutting-edge composite materials that feel smooth to the touch like unglazed pottery, do not retain heat from your hands and always have a refreshing feel.

“FUMI” is a traditional tapered-barrel mechanical pencil with a knock-type 0.5mm lead and a total length of 142mm and a maximum diameter of 11.5mm.
The body (excluding the tip) and the knock cap are made from Mitsui Chemicals’ “NAGORI®” material.
Its unique features include a smooth surface (a first for a pen body) and thermal conductivity equivalent to that of ceramic, which reduces heat buildup and keeps the grip fresh. Additionally, the material’s weight, similar to that of ceramic, supports pressure to ensure smooth writing.
Comes in four earth tone based colors: Stone Black, Sea Blue, Shell White and Sand Gray. Each color has a subtle ripple or marble pattern reminiscent of stone grain. Each is a one of a kind pattern in the world*.

Mechanical pencil featuring “NAGORI®”
The surface has a smooth texture reminiscent of natural materials such as unglazed pottery or stone. When you hold it, the fine irregularities on the surface prevent slipping, providing a firm grip.
Thermal conductivity of the material is about 10 times that of ordinary polypropylene, and it quickly transfers heat from your fingers, preventing heat buildup in the grip, maintaining a slight cool feeling. It is also less likely to become sticky from sweaty hands and always feels fresh.
The material’s specific gravity is more than twice that of ordinary polypropylene, and its weight is similar to that of ceramic, which assists with pen pressure and makes writing (pencil movement) smooth.

The exterior is a soft, matte earth color reminiscent of pottery or natural stone, with (from left in the photo) Stone Black having brown marble on the surface, Sea Blue having silver ripples, Shell White having brown marble, and Sand Gray having white stone grain…these patterns and designs stand out. Each pattern is created by marble molding* and is unique and one of a kind in the world.
