Tombow Pencil Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Kita-ku, Tokyo; President: Junichi Fukushima) is pleased to announce that November 1st has been designated “MONO Day.”
MONO Day was certified and registered as a “commemorative day” by the Japan Anniversary Association (headquarters: Saku City, Nagano Prefecture) on January 11th of this year. Accordingly, the MONO Day symbol mark was established as shown below.
Starting this year, we will be positioning November 1st as a day to thank our MONO fans and will deepen communication with them through user participation campaigns and other activities. This year, we will be running two campaigns. We look forward to your participation.
The reason why the anniversary was chosen as November 1st is because MONO comes from the Greek word “MONOS,” which means “one and only,” and the date with consecutive “1”s is appropriate. Also, the MONO symbol mark is a three-color stripe of blue, white, and black, so the date with three “1”s standing up is appropriate.
(MONO History)
“MONO”* is the name of TOMBOW’s premium pencil launched in 1963. In 1969 the company launched the “MONO” plastic eraser, a derivative of the pencil. The blue, white, and black MONO stripes were used from the very first product. Continuous brand management for over half a century has led to the creation of a brand image characterized by “high quality and precision” and “simple and smart.” In recognition of its popularity and notoriety in 2017 the blue, white, and black MONO stripes were registered as the first “trademark consisting solely of color”. Currently MONO brand products include five writing instrument lines (148 product numbers) and two correction product lines (130 product numbers).
*The name MONO was coined by Professor Hideo Akamatsu of the Faculty of Science at the University of Tokyo. Our company had invited Professor Akamatsu to conduct pencil lead research starting in 1949.
